Baking a difference!
Sustainable ingredients are an essential part of your bread, pastries and chocolate these days. Consumers are increasingly attentive to their health and that of the planet. Debic helps you make the right choices.
The bakery sector uses a lot of palm oil and cocoa. This is partly because palm oil gives excellent results in end products when it comes to texture and mouthfeel. But in terms of sustainability, these ingredients do not score the highest. This has to do with deforestation, as well as with the fact that deforestation poses a further threat to already endangered animal species. Debic is determined to make a difference with high-quality ingredients that are also sustainable. That is why our products are made exclusively with sustainably harvested palm oil and cocoa.
Debic uses SG palm oil, which is palm oil that is RSPO-certified. SG stands for ‘segregated’: the term indicates that this oil, kept separate, is the most sustainable variety available. This palm oil not only comes from certified plantations but can be traced through the entire production chain right back to the source. As regards cocoa, Debic has also taken the necessary measures. Our cocoa is UTZ-certified: that label guarantees that the cocoa is grown and harvested with a great deal of attention to the environment and cocoa farmers.
FrieslandCampina, Debic’s parent company, strives to reduce the carbon emissions per litre of milk to as low a level as possible. Our current ecological footprint per litre of milk is now half of the global average. And we would like to bring that figure even lower. Together with our growers, we continue to set new sustainability goals, and we focus on sustainable sources and more environmentally friendly production and packaging.
As regards our main ingredient, cream, we ensure that bakers, pastry chefs and chocolatiers have the most delicious and sustainable option available. Our cows, for example, are fed only sustainably grown feed and have the best possible living conditions. They can graze in the pastures as often as possible, and that makes for the creamiest end product. Moreover, our cream and dessert assortment contain no artificial flavourings or colourings.
We are also trying to make a difference by reducing the environmental footprint of our farms as well, for example by using renewable or sustainable energy. Wherever possible, the energy is generated right on the farm using windmills, manure fermentation and solar panels. As a result, our production facilities can now run fully on green energy.

By working with the best, most sustainable ingredients, you, too, can help reduce our environmental footprint.
•Choose the right partners, who are committed to working for a better world.
•Enter into an agreement with local producers, for instance with fruit growers. This way, you not only get the freshest but also the most sustainable fruit. The less the fruit has to travel, the lower the CO2 emission.
•Use seasonal products. These are not only cheaper but also more sustainable, because they take less energy to produce.
•Always use the entire product. Leftover fruit can be used, for instance, to make a delicious smoothie.
•Get to know your labels. An organic label is not always more sustainable. Suppliers are happy to give you the necessary information.
•Use green or renewable energy wherever possible.
•Don’t forget to communicate about your efforts! For example, via digital screens in your store, on your social media or by talking about it with your customers. They will appreciate it and be happy to pass the information along.
•Always be consistent with your choices. Are you making conscious efforts to work with sustainable ingredients? In that case, ensure that your packaging is also environmentally friendly.
Your customers and the planet will thank you for it.
